職場英語 場景9 First day in office為第一天做籌備

Part 2. First day in office

What to dress

Tomorrow will be my first day at work, what do you think I should be wearing?

Well, if you want to look professional, serious and more conservative, a blue dress, white shirt and not-too-high shoes would be the best choice. But sometimes, very formal clothes will keep you at a distance from your colleagues. It depends on the company’s dress code.

Indeed, I found most of the employees dress casually when I went to the interview. Only the manager was in suit and tie and he just came back from a ceremony. It seems that their dress code is not that formal. Probably, I should put on car key and simple shirt.

Whatever you choose, make sure they are neat and clean.

What to put in my briefcase

Do you think my briefcase is big enough to put in all these stuff?

Let me see. Laptop, flash disk, a ballpoint pen, a pencil, a notebook, a pair of glasses, cell phone, charger, moisture, notion, … Oh, that is too much. You are not going to a business trip.

I guess I need all of them.

Actually, the company will provide you with all of these supplies. So, you can leave this very thick notebook at home.

I know. But it is my lucky charm. I carry it all the time.

Suit yourself. Don’t forget to set the alarm clock.

UNLIKE most other nonfoolish holidays,April Fool’s Day,or sometimes All Fool’s day,has a fairly(非常)foggy(含糊)history.

There is no“first April Fool’s Day”that can be pinpointed(查明).Some believe it evolved in several cultures at the same time. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition is 1582,in France.

Prior(正正在…之前)to that, the new year was celebrated for eight days,翻譯,in the spring ,beginning on March 25 and ending on April 1.New Year’s Day was moved to January 1,翻譯,when Charles Ⅸ of France introduced the Gregorian Calendar (陽歷)in 1564.

However, communications being what they were in the days when news travelled by foot, many people did not receive the news for several years.

Others refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1.These“backward(掉队的)folk(國平易近)”were labeled(掀上標簽,稱為)as“fools”by the populace(佈衣)。

This troublesome behaviour evolved over time into a tradition of prank-playing(開打趣)on the first day of April. The tradition spread to England and Scotland in the 18th century.April Fool’s Day then developed into an international day of fun.

Of course, being happy at work depends mostly on how much you like your job. But there are also smaller steps that can boost your happiness, as well. Some of these steps are VERY small, but the fact that you’re taking steps to improve your situation itself boosts happiness。
  1. Check for eyestrain by putting your hand to your forehead in a salute. If your eyes feel relieved, your work space is too bright。
  2. Sit up straight with your shoulders down ― every time I adjust my sitting position, I instantly feel more energetic and cheerier。
  3. Get a phone headset. I resisted for a long time, because it looks so preposterous, but it’s really much more comfortable. Also, it lets me pace while I talk on the phone, which also looks preposterous, but is energizing。
  4. Don’t keep candy on your desk. Studies show that people are much more likely to snack when a treat is within easy reach, and a handful of M&Ms each day could mean a weight gain of five pounds by year’s end。
  5. Never say "yes" on the phone; instead, say, "I’ll get back to you." When you’re actually speaking to someone, the desire to be accommodating is very strong, and can lead you to say "yes" without enough consideration. Along the same lines..。
  6. When deciding whether to say "yes", imagine that you’re accepting a job that you’ll have to do next week. Don’t agree to something just because it seems so far off that it doesn’t seem onerous。
  7. Don’t let yourself get too hungry. The Big Man goes without eating for hours and hours at a time, so once, trying to be helpful, I bought him a big bag of granola to keep in his desk. He ate the whole bag in one day and ended up sick as a dog. Lesson: eat regularly。
  8. Take care of difficult calls, tasks, or emails as quickly as possible. Procrastinating makes them harder; getting them done gives a big boost of relieved energy。
  9. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, think hard about how you spend your time. Be honest. How much time do you spend surfing the internet, looking for things you’ve misplaced, or doing a task that’s really someone else’s job? Also..。
  10. Let yourself stay ignorant of things you don’t need to know。

  12. Say "Good morning" to everyone. Social contact is cheering, and if you feel that you’re on good terms with all the people in your office, you’ll be happier each day. Also, it’s polite。

Delegates to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China have hailed a proposal in President Hu Jintao's report to introduce a motion system that enables Party delegates to collectively put forward their opinions and suggestions - like legislators do - to develop democracy within the Party.
